Genes in the period family encode for the locomotor activity, metabolism, and behavior of the circadian rhythm system. More research is required to determine the specific function of PER2. While the primary "control center" of the human circadian system is located in the suprachiasmatic nucleus in the hypothalamus, PER2 is expressed in a myriad of human tissues (see figure, below). |
